everest base camp from Jiri

Hello, everyone! I am looking to do some trekking in Nepal in mid April to early May! I have done many long and hard treks and i am very fit. I am looking to do it without a guide, but I would be willing to hire a guide if I could split the cost with some other people. I definitely don’t want an organized tour. I am looking to take a bus from Kathmandu to Jiri and starting the trek from Jiri, then going all the way to Everest Base Camp, then going to Gokyo, and then going back to Lukla. I would then fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. I am thinking this will take 23-25days to complete. I am flexible with the starting date! I am arriving in Kathumandu late at night on 19th April and thinking of gong to Jiri on 20th or 21st. let me know if you are keen to trek with me 🙂

  1. Hey Aki!

I actually have the exact same plans (thus far). My flight heads out April 21, I arrive in Kathmandu on the 23rd. Then Ill bus it to Jiri, hike to Lukla rather than fly and then hike to EBC. I’ll likely stay in some high elevation town to acclimatize (around 12,000 ft.). Then on the way back I was considering buying a plane tic from Lukla to KTM. It all depends on timing though. It’s hit or miss for day of booking.

Anyways…. I bought a solo flight from San Francisco to KTM and plan do not foresee any friends coming along. I plan to meet people along the way; although I am kind of apprehensive. It would be great to start the journey off with another solo traveler!

  2. Hi Aki and Angie,

I am looking to do a similar trip to you.I am aiming to arrive late April. I am looking to go to Everest Base camp via Gokyo Lakes first. This avoids a lot of the traffic on the way to Base camp and I have an amazing Guide already. My friend has already trekked with him and he is fantastic. He is able to organise all trekking permits and passes for us.
I have around 16-18 days and was hoping to start the trek from Salleri and head to Gokyo Lakes and then across the Cho La pass.
    More the merrier I think.
Please let me know what you think and we can discuss further. He also offers Airport pick up.

    • Right now I’m planning to independent hike (may need to hire porter to help with camera equipment) and do the Goyko Ri trek as well, starting at KTM around the 19th and flying to Lukla.

      Aki 🙂

  6. What’s Good Aki!
I was planning to do a similar trek!
Starting from Jiri somewhere in between the 16-21, and would love to do EBC without hiring a guide. Everyone I speak with says it’s perfectly doable without a guide. Not sure that I want to do Gokyo- I had planned on around 21 days to do EBC and hike back to Lakla and get a flight. It would be cool to at least start with someone to get my feet on the ground, even if our paths don’t stay connected the whole time! I would love to leave Kathmandu with you maybe on the 20th.

Let me know what you think.
    Dylan

    • Hi Dylan
would you like to shoot me a message on FB? Aki Shigihara

      cheers Aki

PS what you said sounds cool 🙂

  7. Hi Everyone –
My husband and I are heading to Jiri on Friday, April 21. Anyone interested in sharing a car instead of taking the local bus? Let us know.
