Markha Valley Trek

Hello trekkers and enthusiastic travelers,

I’m planning to trek in the Markha Valley at end of August/beginning of September (most important: when the high season is over).
The maximal trekking duration should be of 9 days and it should be possible to perform it completely in tea houses/home stays.
I would also like not to miss the experience of getting to Leh by bus making some stops in between (Manali and Keylong). I think that meeting in Delhi and travel together to Leh would be nice and also a good chance to know each other before the trekking-start.
(The mandatory description fields are filled just with respect to trekking though).

I wish that some of you get in contact so that we can form a nice little group and plan further details together according to everybody’s previous experiences and current needs.

About me: I have been trekking twice in Nepal and feel ok carrying my stuff on the shoulders and finding the right path (or getting lost 😉 ) without guide’s instructions.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Ester

PS: since my final decision about performing the whole travel or not is dependent of somebody else’s participation, it would be very nice if possible interested ones get in touch soon.

  1. hello Ester as am also planing for Ladakh trek will be there in ladakh on 1st week of sep, am planing for Stok Kangri summit trek, so if your choice is flexible & you are good in mountain trekking you can join me as well.

    • Hi Ruth, hi Ketan,

      nice to hear from you.
I was thinking about a “quiet” independent home-stay trekking and I fear you have more ambitious plans than me.
Unfortunately I am not a climber and I think that the Stok Kangri would be too much from me.
Could an home-stay trekking come into consideration for you?
I am currently also in touch with another possible trekker but she could start at the end of July and not in September.
I have to clarify with her and see how it is going on.
I would be nice to meet and do something all together but we have to check how flexible we are with everybody’s plans.

      Please keep in touch.

      Cheers,

      Ester

  2. Hi Ester,

I’m also going to Delhi around the same time. I’m currently still deciding between doing the Stok Kangri or the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. Haven’t checked on Markha Valley yet. But if you’re flexible on the trek choice maybe we can go together. I’m definitely going to be in Delhi on that 1st week of September since I have booked the ticket.

  3. Hi Ester,

I don’t think Stok Kangri will require climbing specialities, it’s a trekkable peak. But yeah it’s still a challenge.

Kashmir Great Lakes is pretty interesting too. Very pretty landscape all around. It’s a moderate trek also like Markha, and quite a cheaper option too. However it’s on the other side of Ladakh. How long are you planning to stay in India?

  4. Ester ruth is right it”s a trekkable peak only sumit attempt is the challengeing part rest is easy & your plan is also good i’ve done this road trip on cycle so you have too many option for home stay or in tent for me the best stay was at jispa/kelong/sarchu & if you want to see star gazing than pang is a good option.

keep in touch will share you more details

  5. Hello Ester,

I am booked for Leh from IN/25 Aug – OUT/4 Sept and plan to do some hiking / trekking independently. my dates are fixed.
I am thinking of several routes and Markha is surely on my list.
Other trek that I have shortlisted is Phyang – Hunder route (moderate hike with 17k fts pass to cross).
In the past I have done some solo&group trek in & around Leh, Spiti & Kashmir valley.

Should you prepone your trek by few days do drop me a line.

    Cheers
    majid

  6. Hi Ester,

Is this trek plan still on? I am form Mumbai, and looking for a pocket-friendly and picturesque trek in in the northern mountains. I can walk like there’s no tomorrow, do not mind carrying stuff, but am not a mountaineer. Thus, more or less, this seems like a good plan to suit my temperament as well as experience-level. 🙂

    Cheers!

    • Hi Paresh,

yes: it seems that the trek is going to happen. From my side I have still some administrative things to clarify and I can not give a 100% sure confirmation at the moment but my plan is to try to join Ketan’s group with starting day on the 3rd of September from Leh.
I would suggest you to contact him for having more detailed information 😉

      Cheers,

      Ester

    • Hi Ester,

Many thanks for writing back; please excuse my delay in replying.
Great to hear that the trek is still on!

And yes, I am in touch with Ketan as well, now. And am just sharing here, what I wrote to him. To begin with: Early September is possible for me as well; or so it seems for now. 😀

However, am travelling down South till Sept 3rd, and am back in Mumbai (my hometown) by the Evening of Sept 3rd (cir. 16h00 @ Airport). Thus, if you guys have flexibility in dates, and if we can start from something like 4th of Sept or later form Delhi, perhaps I could also join in.

Let’s all keep in touch! 🙂

      Best regards,
      Paresh

    • Hi Paresh,

since it seems that Ruth is joining too and since she needs to be back in Delhi on the 10th, I think it would be to tight schedule to postpone the trekking start later than on the 3rd.
Maybe has Ketan a clear time-schedule and can confirm.

      Let’s keep anyway in touch.

      Cheers,

      Ester

  7. P.S.: And yes, my objective is also to capture some landscape (photography). Thus, hope that is something that is alight by you/the-group.

  8. Hi Ester, everyone else,

I am also planning to do the Markha valley trek next summer, second half of July, toghether with my girlfriend. Is anyone else planning to go at that time?

Could you kindly share relevant information and websites?

We are still wondering to what extent we can do this independently, or need a guide.

We’d be keen on staying in home stays as much as possible.

    Alex

  9. Ciao Alessandro,

my idea would be to be there in September so unfortunately there won’t be any chance to trek together if your schedule is for June.
According to the information that I have been collected no guide is needed and the trek is feasible independently.

I don’t have web sites to suggest but I have been reading this guide-book and found it quite good:

  10. Hi all,

Please let me know if I can join.
I have 2-3 weeks available, dates flexible.
    Thanks
    Arjun

  12. Hi everybody,

I had to postpone this trek because of medical reason.
Sorry not to be able to join 🙁

    Cheers,

    Ester
