Nar Phu to Upper Mustang

I’ve always been fascinated by the Upper Mustang region and will be doing this along with a close friend of mine in May. But rather go along the traditional route, I’ll be crossing over from the eastern region of Manang by covering the Nar and Phu villages and also try and make it in time for the Tiji Festival (15th -17th May) in Lo Manthang. To keep costs to a minimum, accommodation will be in tea houses (available and all places mentioned below – and the reason for taking the Thorung La route and not the Teri La pass) and not camps. Any guide or like minded individuals wanting to join up on this journey are more than welcome.

1 Arrive in Kathmandu
2 Drive to Jagat
3 Trek to Dharapani
4 Trek to Koto Qupar
5 Trek to Meta or Dharmashala
6 Trek to Kyang/ or stretch it to Phu village
7 Rest day at Phu (or trek to Himlung Base camp)
8 Trek to Mahedra Pul /Junam
9 Trek to Nar village
10 Trek to Yak Kharka
11 Trek to Thorung High Camp
12 Cross Thorung La and reach Muktinath
13 Trek to Tetang via Gyu la
14 Trek to Tangge
15 Trek to Yara via Dhe village
16 Trek to Lo Manthang via Lo La
17 Attend Tiji Festival and explore around Lo Manthang (Chosar, Namgyal etc)
18 Attend Tiji Festival and explore around Lo Manthang (Chosar, Namgyal etc)
19 Attend Tiji Festival and explore around Lo Manthang (Chosar, Namgyal etc)
20 Trek to Tsarang
21 Trek to Gheling
22 Trek to Chele
23 Trek to Kagbeni or stretch to Jomson
24 Fly back to Kathmandu

All we need is a guide for the journey (and to arrange permits) and an explorer’s spirit.
I’m estimating cost as follows –
Nar Phu Permit ($75) + 11 days Upper Mustang permit ($550) + Daily expenses ($10 food + $10 Accommodation + $25 Guide wages) ~~$1700 – $1800

  1. Dear Shishir
Thanks for your message. Your route is same as i want. But only the time in different. I want to depart in April as i have to back to my work in May.

My plan is to take guide/porter/horseman from Koto. I’ll do camping in Nar Phu region. After Nar I’ll take Thorong La route through Kang La. Then from Kagbeni I’ll start for Mustang. I am thinking to buy permit for 18 days as i want to stay more days in Lo.

  2. Sounds like an amazing plan!! Is the trip still on? I always wanted to see both Lo and Naar Phu
