Nepal

Hello, everyone! I am looking to do some trekking in Nepal in late May! I am on a shoestring budget, so I am looking to do it without a guide, but I would be willing to hire a guide if I could split the cost with some other people. I definitely don’t want an organized tour, though, as there’s no way I could afford it, and I’m not even sure I would want to if I did have the money. I am looking to take a bus from Kathmandu to Jiri and starting the trek from Jiri, then going all the way to Everest Base Camp, then going to Gokyo, and then going back to Lukla. I would then fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. All in all, this will take around 25 days from the research I have done, and it will cost around $800 USD ($30 USD per day x 25 days). I am not very flexible on the starting date (around May 22nd), but the pace is flexible and relaxed.

  1. Hi Nik,
I too want to do trek from Jiri. When would you be reaching Kathmandu?

  2. Hello Nik,

I was also planning to do this trek during the same time. Can you please give me some more details.

    • Hi Ranjana
Iam going for Everest Base Camp along with Gokyo and chola pass along with some friends on 20 th May and Return on 4th June. If u r intrested and willingi to join us pls reply back

  3. Hello to the both of you!

Sarita: I would be arriving in Kathmandu sometime around May 22nd-29th, and I would like to start the trek as soon as possible from that point. I can’t be flexible with this date because I will be coming straight from a different trip.

Ranjana: What are some of the details you are looking for? I’m going to do a lot of research in the next couple of weeks to really set up a plan, but I don’t have a lot of specifics yet. I think I will arrive around May 22nd-29th. I will spend a day getting ready and getting the permits and necessary equipment in Kathmandu. From there, the next day I want to take a bus to Jiri. Then I want to start the trek from Jiri and go all the way to Namche. From the research I have done, I’ve learned that this takes about five days. This portion helps prepare you for the altitude and minimizes the risk of altitude sickness. It’s also beautiful and a unique cultural experience compared to the rest of the trek. So from Namche, I want to go to EBC, come back around to Gokyo, then come back to Lukla. Then fly from Lukla to Kathmandu. I can invite you to the Google Doc that I have been working on if you want to see more specifics. I am undecided if I want a guide. I can’t afford a guide if I go by myself, but I am willing to get a guide if I can split the cost with some other people. In total, the trek should take around 25 days. If we don’t get a guide, the individual cost would be around $30 USD per day. A guide would be an additional $30 USD per day, but we could split that if we got a bigger group of people. 4. Hi Nick,
I could be interested in joining you on this amazing hike. I am 31 from Australia and looking to head to Nepal around the same time. I have a trip planned after where I need to be in Jakarta on the 21st June, so your timing would work for me and I would like to hike for around 1 month. I too would only want a guide if we could split between a few people and I will be on a tight budget too. Look forward to your reply Monika

    • Monika:

That sounds great! Is the date that you need to go to Jakarta flexible? I still don’t have the exact date set quite yet. I should know within the next week or so, though, and I will keep you posted.

    • Hey monika , i am planning to do everest trek from lukla and i will be starting from 25th or 26th i haven’t planned anything but if you want to join we can do it so reply Asap.

  7. Monika:

For some reason I got the email notification from your comment and I can read your comment via the email that I got but not via this website… Not sure if this is a glitch or just my inexperience with this website. Either way, I don’t think our plans differ that substantially, and I am totally willing to be flexible. Island Peak Summit sounds like something I’d definitely be interested in. I’m still waiting on confirmation on the start date, though, and I think that will determine a lot. I will keep you posted and let you know once I figure it out. It should be within the next couple of days.

  8. Hey Nik,
So I have two friends who I have recruited for this trip. We have all purchased out flights arriving on the 23/05 around 10am and leaving on the 21/06 at around 11pm. • Monika:

I apologize for the delayed response. I still have not gotten confirmation of when my trip before this one ends, so I still have not solid news. But I can say that at this point, it is likely that I won’t be able to start this early. I think the earliest that I can arrive in Kathmandu is going to be around May 27th.

  9. Monika:

I was just notified that the trip that I anticipated I would be going on has fallen through, so that means I am able to join your group, if it’s still a possibility! My portion of the trip before Nepal ends on May 20th, so the earliest that I could arrive in Kathmandu would be May 21st. Just so we can communicate more easily, do you have a way that would be easier to contact you than this website? Looking forward to your response.

  10. I’d like to get in on this…..

However, I land in Kathmandu on the 29th. Flights aren’t really changeable, unfortunately…..

Other than that, exact trip I was looking at doing to kick off my 9 weeks in Nepal! So…… If you (or anyone else) is keen for the end of May/start of June, I’m there with bells on!

I was also planning on taking the local bus to Jiri, walking from there, hitting up 3 passes etc.

So yeah, let me know if anyone is keen for a slightly later start-date than the one originally proposed….

P.S. I’m also in-country for another 4-5 weeks, and also have Annapurna (Circuit, not peak!) in my sights, as well as some epic rafting/kayaking. And whatever else people are up for. 🙂

  11. Actually, I just re-read your messages (it’s 2:30am here!). 😀

It seems, Nick, that the earliest you can get here is the 27th, and Monika, you’re kinda flexible.

    How about……

You two hang in Kathmandu for a couple of days, I arrive on the 29th, mad-dash to get TIMS card etc, then we kick start this epic adventure on the 30th? I’d be keen to go straight out of the gates on the 29th, but I’m pretty sure the bus to Jiri leaves early in the morning, and I land around lunch time.

I don’t have any gear to buy in Kathmandu; bringing it all with me. (I like my gear I TRUST my gear)…. 😉 So all I need are permits, which I’m sure I can sort out in one afternoon.

    What do you say?

P.S. Monika, I’m up for Island Peak as well. 🙂

  12. Wait….. It IS late! I read this the wrong way around…….

Looks like you’ll all have an epic time on the trail, and I’ll have to find others to join me, following behind you by about a week.

  13. Hi Everyone! I´m also planning on going to EBC on those dates. I would be glad if I could join you. Monika´s itinerary sounds perfect for me. Let me know if it´s still possible to join.
    Joaquín.

  14. Hey! Is this trip still going ahead? I will be doing the 3 passes trek starting from Jiri around the 22nd but the date is flexible.
Let me know if I can join! Thanks
